BBC News - Should you even take a camera on holiday?

BBC News - Should you even take a camera on holiday?

I take a lot of photos, for different purposes.  The example in the article is photographing clay tablets of Akkadian cuneiform. I wouldn't take photos in a museum - I assume that photography is banned, and could damage the items on display.

Sometimes I take photos of notices or other information I want ot record.  But more often I want a photo to be a thing of beauty.

BBC News - Pianist Krystian Zimerman storms out over phone recording

BBC News - Pianist Krystian Zimerman storms out over phone recording

"Jasper Hope, chief operating officer at London's Royal Albert Hall, said filming at live events was not a problem - as long as it did not disturb the artist or the audience.
"It's not hard to be discreet," he told the BBC."

Apart from the issues around recording, looking at this from the audience's point of view - when you are sitting in a dimmed hall the sight of just one lit screen in your line of vision is distracting.

BBC News - Pareidolia: Why we see faces in hills, the Moon and toasties

BBC News - Pareidolia: Why we see faces in hills, the Moon and toasties

The "face detection" function on my camera spots "faces" in weird places.  Looking at buildings from a distance, it "recognises" faces in symetrical windows.

BBC News - Narrow Swindon alleyway painted with double yellow lines

"The council said local residents had asked the authority to "deal with illegal parking in alleyways".
A spokesman said: "It seems that our contractors forgot just how big cars actually are when they painted this one.
"We will be taking it up with them.""

First Capital Connect voted worst train operator by commuters

First Capital Connect voted worst train operator by commuters | Business | The Guardian

My experience of First Capital Connect has been fairly good.  The commuter time services to and from London are very busy.  Train operators can't be blamed for signalling problems and broken down trains of other companies.  Often announcements about broken down trains are coy of announcing if the broken down train you are travelling on belongs to the train company you are travelling with, leading you to suspect that it is.  My main grumble with First Capital Connect is the number of times lifts are out of service, not with the trains themselves.

On train surveys, I remember quite a few years ago being on a train when a survey was being carried out.  It was an inter city service on the East Coast main line, and I forget who was then operating that line.  The people carrying out the survey were only interested in the people with seats.  Those of us standing in a crowded lobby were not surveyed!

BBC News - Colliery landslip suspends rail services

BBC News - Colliery landslip suspends rail services

Question 1 - why was there a large unstable slag heap next to a railway line?

Question 2 - how many other hazards are there near railway lines?

Question 3 - what lessons have been learned since Aberfan

Question 4 - This mess won't be cleared up quickly.  what more can be done to help passengers?  From the comments on this video it seems that not enough coaches are being provided.

Read about Hatfield Colliery on Wikipedia.

Lady Margaret Manor, Doddington Village in Kent

Lady Margaret Manor, Doddington Village in Kent

I stayed at the youth hostel at Doddington.  I reached this page when trying to remember the name of the fruitarian I had seen mention on a sign near the youth hostel - he was Josiah Oldfield.
